Communicate your science to schools

If you want to…

  • Communicate science in a way that excites students

  • Understand your audience to meet them where they are at

  • Use a variety of powerful approaches to maximise engagement

  • Become a super effective science communicator in schools

  • Leave an indelible memory of your visit

…then this course is for you!

Why should you do this course?

A school is not a scientists' conference! A slideshow of graphs and data will not impress.

Youngsters in schools are a mixed bunch, with different learning styles, interests, attitudes to learning, abilities and concentration levels. If you think they will all be able to focus on a 60 minute lecture that you have rehashed from a recent conference, then you have another thing coming!

So what is the best approach to take? You need to know how children become interested in learning things, how you can capture and maintain their attention, and challenge their thinking and problem solving so that they feel enriched by your visit. In short science communication in schools is an art!

Through this course I am going to give you everything you need to immediately make your school visits a resounding success!

After completing this course you will:

  • Understand what teachers want from your school visit

  • Engage and interest a school group right from the start

  • Have strategies to engage children with different learning styles

  • Understand how to approach classroom visits, hands-on workshops and multi day events

  • Use storytelling to initiate an inquiry process

  • Devise practical challenges to get their full participation

  • Know how to manage a successful school field trip

  • Create a well sequenced and varied plan to enthuse a class around your area of science expertise.
