Meet your presenter

Kia ora! My name is Julian Thomson. I live in Wellington, New Zealand and I am a science communicator and educational consultant.

I began teaching in 1993 and in 1994 moved to Aotearoa New Zealand where I spent about 14 years as a high school environmental sciences and outdoor education teacher.

I transitioned into full time science communication in 2008, working for New Zealand's government geological research institute GNS Science. This involved me in a wide variety of educational outreach activities such as teacher training, leading field trips, working with school students, making YouTube videos, creating websites, presenting on several TV documentaries etc.

In 2020 I founded my own education and science communication consultancy Out There Learning Ltd,  where I continue to bridge the gap between researchers on the one side, and educators and the public on the other. I am a Field Based STEM PLD facilitator for schools on behalf of New Zealand's Ministry of Education and am also involved in Waldorf teacher training.

An increasing focus of my work is offering science communication training for researchers, so that they can confidentally find their voice and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with non-scientists.
